Situated on one of the Balaeric Islands in the mediterranean sea, Palma de Mallorca is the only true city on Mallorca. Half the island's population, around half a million people, live in or around the city, which is a popular tourist destination. Tourist numbers have been increasing since the 1950s and the city is a very busy commercial and cultural center. Although the main holiday season lass from the end of April until October, visitors outside these months will find plenty to do, although a warm jacket for the evenings is to be recommended. Many of the boutique hotels Palma can offer are situated in the city's historic quarter and offer such facilities as swimming pools and saunas, with restaurants providing both Spanish and international dishes.

The Spanish are fond of their public holidays and as shops are generally closed on these public days, it is sensible to check in advance in order to avoid disappointment. In all, there are around 14 public holidays, so determined shoppers need to have an alternative means of amusement on these days. Away from the main tourist areas, shops are also generally closed on Sundays. Many of these public holidays celebrate religious or historic events and are in themselves an interesting way to immerse in the laid-back Spanish culture.

Palma offers much in the way of entertainment for tourists who take he time to explore this beautiful city. Unfortunately, many visitors to the island spend almost all of their time on one of the magnificent beaches and fail to appreciate all the city has to offer. Staff at any of the boutique hotels Palma has will be happy to provide guests with information about any special events taking place during a visit. Such events allow the visitor to get a real taste of local life and are to be recommended. The boutique hotels Palma can provide will also have details of the City Sightseeing bus that allows visitors to visit several of the most popular tourist attractions as well as the major shopping centres. For a welcome break from exploring the city, visitors could do no better than to stop for lunch in one of the restaurants close to La Rambla, a picturesque avenue that is often filled with flower-selling stalls.

Those with a taste for the affluent should head to the marina, where the array of yachts will be sure to impress. Some of these magnificent creations are among the best in the world and provide a tantalizing glimpse into how the truly rich live. For those on a more modest budget, a regular ferry service to the mainland runs from the adjacent port. From along the Passeig Maritim, the waterfront streets, there are excellent views of two of the most visited tourist attractions in the area. The Sa Seu cathedral is a 14th century gothic structure that is considered to be one of the most important structures in the islands, whereas Bellver Castle, another impressive gothic structure, houses the city's Museum of History. Those who like a vibrant night-life will not be disappointed, as the city really comes alive at night. There are usually concerts and ballet-performances on offer at various times and the city's tourist information office will be able to provide visitors with an itinerary of events.

The history of the city as an important settlement dates back to Roman times, although records show that some kind of settlement was here as far back as the Bronze Age. The city has had its fair share of troubles, with attacks from Barbary pirates and Arabs dotted through its history. Things have been considerably n more peaceful since the city became the official capital of the Balearic Islands. The islands are increasingly popular with return visitors and are included amongst the major holiday destinations of Europe. Although the city has many modern aspects, with hotel chains and high-end shops, the Old Town provides a glimpse into the past, with its narrow streets, its impressive cathedral and architectural splendor. Any of the boutique hotels Palma boasts would be an excellent base for exploring this diverse city and visitors are sure to be among the increasing number of return travellers once they have experienced all that Palma has to offer!
